FOLK PROJECT – MUSIC NATION 2012 – SUPERSTRINGS / BELLOWHEAD

BELLOWHEAD will perform with SUPER STRINGS young musicians in a spectacular concert at the STEAM Museum, Swindon, on Sunday 4th March 2012.

The Super String’s project for Music Nation will involve 120 young string players performing the world premiere of a specially commissioned piece alongside folk super group BELLOWHEAD, recent winners of BBC Radio 2 ‘Best Live Act’ award.

The new work, a Folk Suite,  is being composed by Bellowhead members Pete Flood & Paul Sartin and is inspired by the life and work of Alfred Williams, a collector of the folk songs of Wiltshire and ‘hammerman’ in the workshops of Great Western Railways in Swindon.  It will see musicians from around Wiltshire play alongside one of the top folk bands in the country.

The concert in March being the culmination of 6 months of folk workshops with young string players which will be taking place across Wiltshire beginning in the autumn 2011.

Verity Sharp, Presenter BBC Radio 3 Late Junction:

“At the heart of our project is the desire to put young people in touch with English folk music. From personal experience I know how learning about our indigenous traditions can unleash musical potential and bring an enriched sense of cultural identity and belonging. For me the introduction to this music came relatively late in life, which is why I am now passionate about finding ways to bring it to people’s attention at the earliest opportunity.”
