THE GYPSY’S VIOLIN by Jeff Moore
Commission by Superstrings Wiltshire, 2009.
Commissioned by Superstrings Wiltshire, The Gypsy’s Violin by Jeff Moore was first performed at Salisbury Arts Centre in May 2009 to a sell out crowd. The combined forces of the young Superstrings players along with the South West’s own professional ensemble, Sarum Orchestra, produced a most memorable World Premiere performance.
Having been awarded money by Youth Music, Superstrings set about having a series of three new and innovative works written to enable young players, both beginners and advanced, to play alongside a top professional string ensemble. The effect of such pieces being to inspire and enthuse the young players to continue to push themselves in their string playing to reach higher goals, gaining greater motivation and self esteem from their professional mentors. The 3 year project explores the amazing scope and range of music for the violin from Gypsy to Jazz and Tallis to Vaughan Williams.
The composer, and virtuoso violinist, Jeff Moore, worked closely with the children in Superstrings in the months leading up to the World Premiere gauging their abilities and developing a work which is accessible for the range of abilities amongst the players. The work has already been performed by other ensembles and will continue to be used by many more in the future.
